SHAH ALAM - In a tragic and untimely loss, Malaysia mourns the loss of a remarkable leader and compassionate soul, Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub.

With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to the Pulai MP who took his final breath on July 23 at 9.23pm at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar, Kedah.

Born on Dec 1, 1961, Salahuddin's life journey was a testament to the power of perseverance and dedication. From his humble beginnings, he rose to become a figure in Malaysia's political landscape, serving the people with unwavering commitment and sincerity.

Through his roles as Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister during former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's administration, Salahuddin displayed exceptional leadership, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless Malaysians.

Amidst the challenges he faced, including the 2015 Pas Muktamar which resulted in him along with 17 other progressive leaders of Pas parting ways with the Islamist party, eventually forming Parti Amanah Negara where Salahudin became its Deputy President.

Beyond his political achievements, Salahuddin's heart lay in grassroots activism, youth empowerment, and community development – a trait nurtured during his days in Angkatan Belia Islam (Abim).

His genuine warmth, approachability and humility endeared him to people from all walks of life, making him a beloved figure in the hearts of his constituents and colleagues; thus allowing him to be re-elected as Pulai MP twice, in the 2018 and 2022 General Elections (GE) – besting his long-time rival, Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed of Barisan Nasional; whom Salahuddin initially lost to in his maiden electoral debut in the constituency in the 2013 GE.

The news of his sudden brain haemorrhage and subsequent hospitalisation sent shockwaves. Despite the relentless efforts of the medical team, fate had its course.
