In recent years, many people I know have witnessed or are involved in the emergence of an unconventional phenomenon: syndicates that facilitate polygamous marriages without the consent of the Syariah Court. This refers to groups or individuals who engage in polygamous marriages without adhering to the legal and religious requirements set by the government and religious authorities. These syndicates often operate underground and without proper documentation, leading to a lack of legal protection for the wives involved.

While polygamy itself is legal under Islamic law, this unauthorized practice raises numerous ethical and legal concerns. Polygamy, even when sanctioned by the Syariah Court, can have profound effects on a marriage and its participants. However, by bypassing the court process, these unregulated polygamous unions often result in significant emotional and psychological distress for the wives involved.

The wives, left without legal protection, might suffer from feelings of neglect, jealousy and resentment towards their husband's additional wives. It is important to note that under the syndicate, any subsequent wives beyond the first will not be protected by law and cannot claim their rights as a legal wife as their marriage is not registered in the eyes of the law. This can strain relationships and disrupt the harmony within the family unit, especially when the husband passes away and the other wives are left with not being able to claim their legal rights.

So, why are some men opting for these unapproved polygamous practices? There are several reasons that fuel this trend. Firstly, while Islam allows multiple marriages under specific conditions, seeking consent from the Syariah Court can be a lengthy and complicated process, often requiring justifications that might not be presentable in traditional family court. These syndicates capitalize on this bureaucratic hurdle by promising a hassle-free solution for men eager to enter into additional marriages.

Another contributing factor is the desire for companionship or a sense of adventure outside the confines of a traditional monogamous marriage. Some men may be looking to address emotional or physical needs, seeking new connections outside their existing relationships. The syndicates tap into these desires, appealing to men's yearning for variety and excitement.

It may seem baffling that such syndicates go unchecked in a country that values religious and moral adherence. Several factors contribute to the lack of intervention.

Primarily, the clandestine nature of these syndicates makes it challenging for authorities to track their operations and take decisive action. According to a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the high number of reported cases of unauthorized polygamous marriages overwhelms the existing resources available for investigation and prosecution.

Furthermore, cultural and societal factors play a role in prolonging this practice. In some cases, men may be from influential backgrounds, enabling them to maneuver around legal roadblocks. There may also be a fear of backlash from conservative sectors if the government were to intervene, as they might perceive it as an encroachment on religious autonomy.

In the realm of relationships, marriage is often viewed as a beautiful union between two individuals who promise to spend their lives with each other. But with the rise of polygamous marriage syndicates, it seems some people have taken the phrase "the more, the merrier" quite literally! I mean, who needs one spouse when you can have two, three, or even four? But let's not forget the consequences of such actions because the reality is far from funny and the impacts beyond repair.

The existence of unregulated polygamous marriage syndicates in Malaysia poses significant challenges to the institution of marriage, the wives involved and the society at large. The emotional and psychological repercussions are substantial and it is essential to address this issue compassionately and urgently. As a nation known for its rich cultural diversity and adherence to religious values, the authorities must find a balance between individual rights and societal well-being, ensuring legal compliance while protecting the sanctity of marriage.
