Dr Mahathir foresees 5-1 win for PN in upcoming state polls

SHAH ALAM - Perikatan Nasional (PN) is predicted to secure an easy victory with a 5-1 win in the state election scheduled for Aug 12, according to former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He believes that the coalition has a strong chance of retaining power in Kelantan, Terengganu, Kedah, and capturing Selangor and Negeri Sembilan, although it may not make headway in Penang.

Dr Mahathir cited a change in sentiment among elderly voters, particularly Malays in rural areas, as a significant factor influencing the election outcome.

"It is based on the change in sentiment shown by elderly voters, especially Malays in rural areas.

"They see that their economic position has not improved, they are still poor and feel depressed. How is progress to be brought to them without getting any guidance or recommendations from the government," he said as reported by the media.

Speaking at the 13th Social Business Day Assembly at Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa Langkawi, Kedah today, Dr Mahathir expressed concern about the lack of government guidance or recommendations to address the economic challenges faced by these vulnerable voters.

On the possibility of independent candidates entering the state election in six states, including his former parliamentary constituency of Langkawi, Dr Mahathir criticised such a move, considering it an attempt to undermine the election process.

He dismissed the idea of independent candidates having a significant impact, asserting that they lack the ability to bring about meaningful change as they do not represent the collective voice of the people.

In his view, elections are meant to form a government, not merely to have individuals act as representatives without broader support.
