SHAH ALAM - National men's singles player Ng Tze Yong could shock the world if he maintains his best performance in the opening round of the World Badminton Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark on Aug 21 to 27.

National men’s singles head coach Hendrawan described his pupil as having his own character in the court and could stand to challenge other players.

“He has standards, if he continues to give his best, anything can happen in the tournament.

“I want him to focus on one game at a time,” he said in an audio recording shared by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) released to the media on Friday.

The 23-year-old ranked 22nd in the world would face against the 2020 Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Zhao Jun Peng from China.

If the Muar-born player could overcome the first round, he may have a shot to meet the world's 12th ranked player Anders Antonsen from Denmark.

For the record, during the debut of the 23-year-old player in Tokyo last year, Ng was eliminated in the second round by Thailand’s high-profile player Sitthikom Thammasin with the score of 9-21, 21-10, 16-2.
