SHAH ALAM - Umno Youth is urging Attorney General Tan Sri Idrus Harun to investigate the authenticity of leaked documents claimed to be an 'Internal Memo' from the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) by the International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) prosecution team.

Its Youth Chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, stated that the 12-page document dated September 10, 2019, touched on the six charges against former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and former Treasury Secretary-General Tan Sri Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah.

He said if it was authentic, the AGC should take appropriate action by withdrawing the six charges against the two individuals in line with the recommendations in the document.

"The contents of the leaked document take the form of recommendations from the IPIC prosecution team, who unanimously took the position that the six charges did not meet the minimum requirements for a criminal breach of trust (CBT) charge to establish a prima facie case.

"The leaked document is alleged to have been addressed to Tan Sri Tommy Thomas (the then Attorney General)," he said in a statement on Friday.

He said that if the document is genuine, they request an investigation to determine whether certain individuals have abused power and position, contrary to the law, to ensure that charges against Najib were continued.

"Furthermore, such elements of political prosecution to create a negative image and cause undue harm have occurred. The country has also suffered losses by only recovering $1.8 billion compared to the agreed $7 billion between Najib's administration and IPIC," he explained.

Akmal made it clear that they would not compromise and would strongly oppose any attempts by any party to misuse the law for personal gain.

"Umno Youth always respects the rule of law. The existing laws in Malaysia aim to ensure that truth and justice are always upheld," he added.

Meanwhile, a Facebook post by Najib stated that, as a victim who had to face the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB)-IPIC case for five years, he had the right to know whether the document was authentic.

He added that the document quoted the entire prosecution and AGC investigators unanimously concluding that there was no case to charge Najib and the charges did not meet the minimum threshold to be brought to court.

"Furthermore, AGC interviewed 138 witnesses, and none of their statements favoured the prosecution's case. There is no evidence in the document that supports the prosecution's case.

"The then Attorney General, Tommy Thomas, also realised that the 1MDB-IPIC case should not be prosecuted. Finally, this case should be dropped," he said.
