Ensure gig economy workers contribute to Perkeso

Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) chief activist Datuk Nadzim Johan said that although all e-hailing drivers and riders were previously required to contribute to SKSPS, he was informed that two victims of the recent Elmina plane crash who were a food deliveryman and an e-hailing driver did not make any contributions.

SHAH ALAM - The time has come for all workers in the gig economy sector to contribute to the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme (SKSPS) programme under the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso).

Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) chief activist Datuk Nadzim Johan said that although all e-hailing drivers and riders were previously required to contribute to SKSPS, he was informed that two deceased victims of the recent Elmina plane crash who were a food deliveryman and an e-hailing driver did not make any contributions.

Therefore, he insisted that Perkeso must be more strict with employers or service providers in the gig economy sector to ensure that all their employees were protected.

"While we are saddened by the accident that befell our Muslim brothers, I am devastated thinking about the fate of the family left behind.

"All parties should be more proactive in ensuring that all Malaysians who work in any sector contribute to Socso for their protection.

"If they are only part-time workers, make sure that a small amount of income is contributed, even RM2, to ensure that their fate is protected if any calamity were to happen," he said in a statement on Saturday.

A total of 10 victims were killed consisting of six passengers, two flight crew as well as two civilians who happened to pass by the crash site at 2.40pm on Thursday.

The two civilian victims were a Foodpanda deliveryman Muhamad Hafiz Muhamad Salleh and an e-hailing driver Sharipuddin Shaari.
