SEPANG - A 12-day operation known as Ops Ulat held at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and KLIA2, here, successfully arrested 15 drivers for offering illegal rental car services.

Deputy Director of the Selangor Road Transport Department (RTD) Ahmad Kamarunzaman Mehat said that the operation was held from Aug 7 to 18th.

He said all those arrested were local men aged between 20 and 60.

"JPJ Selangor has seized 15 vehicles of various types including Perodua Alza, Perodua Bezza and Proton Persona.

"Investigations revealed that these 'touts' were enticing either locals or foreign tourists to offer transport services at a certain rate and charges to be paid upon arrival at the destination," he told Sinar.

He added that the investigation was conducted under Section 205(1) of the Land Public Transport Act (APAD) 2010 with fines not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both if convicted.

"Anyone who conspires to do this 'tout' activity will also be prosecuted according to Section 243(1), under the same act," he said.

He said RTD takes this illegal activity seriously and will take action to curb illegal rental car activities at KLIA and KLIA 2.

"The public is advised to use valid transport services either through the service counter provided at KLIA, KLIA 2 or by making reservations through the e-hailing application," he said.

Kamarunzaman said enforcement will be implemented continuously from time to time and strict action will be taken against drivers or vehicle owners who offer unlicensed or illegal rental car services.
