Lam Thye awarded honorary fellowship for outstanding achievements in workplace health, safety

SHAH ALAM - Social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has been appointed as the Academy of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Malaysia (AOEMM) honorary fellow in recognition of his outstanding achievements and contributions to the occupational safety and health sector.

The announcement was made at the recent 17th AOEMM Annual General Meeting, chaired by President Dr Abu Hasan Samad.

Lee who also serves as the Safe Community Bond Association (Ikatan) chairman spoke on his efforts to work with occupational health doctors (OHD) to meet the needs of various industries.

He highlighted the need of occupational health doctors' role to assess, diagnose, treat, prevent, manage diseases and injuries that can occur in the sector.

"Apart from that, I also feel that they can provide a good support system to strengthen the occupational safety and health field and bring about a positive change in the workplace or society," he said in a statement on today.

Meanwhile, Lee said OHDs must uphold professionalism and ethics in the practice of occupational medicine.

He added that OHDs need to be actively involved with other stakeholders in occupational safety and health (OSH) education or training through collaboration, consultation, communication and standardisation.

"They can work closer with companies' management and human resources team to understand workplaces' condition which will foster a better relation between OHDs and the industry," he said.
