KUALA LUMPUR - The Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will look at the best way to facilitate the affairs of a university student, who is receiving treatment at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, for her to continue her studies.

The student, Dayangku Siti Mashitah Awangku Sulaiman, has been been hospitalised for the past two months after losing both legs and arms due to complications from appendicitis.

MOHE in a statement said Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal visited the student in hospital today and distributed aid to her on behalf of Yayasan Kebajikan Siswa (YKS). The aid was received by her family.

"When asked, the UMS second-year international relations student expressed enthusiam and determination to continue her studies," said the statement.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Yusof in the same statement said the presence of MOHE was a sign of support for students and their family members as well as showed the ministry's commitment in its continued concern for the welfare and well-being of students.

He said YKS will also actively ensure that welfare of the students is maintained throughout their studies on campus, adding that YKS has been actively providing various types of assistance and donations to needy students in both public and private institutions of higher learning.

During the same visit, assistance from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) was also presented by its chairman Datuk Norliza Abdul Rahim and chief executive officer Ahmad Dasuki Abdul Majid.

Also present during the visit were MOHE secretary-general Datuk Seri Abdul Razak Jaafar, UMS deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs and alumni) Associate Professor Dr Raman Noordin and YKS Board of Trustees member Nur Zahiah Saideh. - BERNAMA
