PUTRAJAYA - Datuk Dr Rahmat Mohamad will resign as the Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) chairman this Thursday.

He is currently the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) Advisory Board chairman for the 2023-2025 session.

His appointment was made by the Law and Institutional Reform Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said last Wednesday.

The Prime Minister Department Legal Affairs Division (BHEU) announced this in a statement that Rahmat's appointment coincided with his background in the international law field as well as his experience as the fifth Asian African Legal Consultative Organisation (AALCO) secretary general.

"In ensuring Suhakam's governance runs smoothly during this transitional session, the government will appoint an interim chairman in the near future to carry out his duty as chairman until a new chairman is appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong," said the division today.

Rahmat who was previously appointed as Suhakam chairman for the 2022-2025 session had implemented various initiatives in the commission including a debate on Suhakam's Annual Report and Financial Statement for 2020 in the House of Representatives from June 12 to 14.
