Melaka develops virtual museum, to feature 26,000 artefacts, documents

MELAKA - The state government through the Melaka Museum Corporation (Perzim) will develop a virtual museum that will feature some 26,000 historical artefacts and documents from the state.

State Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture deputy exco, Datuk Zaidi Attan said the implementation of the programme under the museum's strategic plan started last month and is expected to be completed by Dec 2027.

"This virtual museum is based on the concept of 'Dream, Explore and Discover'. It will be re-digitised so that the information and exhibits are easier for visitors to see and find.

"This is also one of our efforts to improve the museum in Melaka and make it a world-class museum. This includes the oldest artefact found in Melaka, the Port de Santiago dating back to 1513," he told reporters after a visit to Banda Hilir today.

Zaidi said the state government, through the Melaka Corporation (MCorp) as the implementing agency, will preserve the Melaka Courthouse building in Banda Hilir as a centre for tangible and intangible heritage.

He said several other historical buildings and sites will also be upgraded, including the Muzium Rakyat, Samudera Museum, Portuguese Well, Munshi Abdullah Building, Kampung Kling Mosque and Cheng Hoon Teng Temple.

"This includes allocations of about RM30 million from the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry and the state government.

"It will be divided among the four main agencies, namely MCorp, Perzim, the Department of Heritage and the Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) for the provision of lighting, facilities, repairs, publicity and maintenance, which is also in preparation for the Visit Melaka Year 2024 (TMM2024)," he said. - BERNAMA
