KUCHING - Newly-appointed mayor of Kuching North (DBKU) Hilmy Othman will focus on the empowerment of city-friendly infrastructure, especially for children and the ageing community, in the city.

The former Deputy Mayor of Kuching South said to realise that, he would hold engagement sessions with the Sarawak Ministry of Women, Children and Community Welfare (KPWK) and Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

"Such initiatives have already been carried out under DBKU and MBKS, but we want to emphasise certain areas for the facilities and will put more efforts into providing facilities that are child-friendly and can cater for the ageing society.

"We will also discuss with MBKS and other ministries, especially KPWK led by Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah since some matters require cabinet approval," he told a press conference after his swearing-in ceremony here today.

He also hoped that more quarters from the private sector would come forward to be involved in the construction of city-friendly facilities, especially for the elderly in Kuching.

Hilmy, 64, took the oath of office as the eighth mayor of DBKU in a ceremony held before Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

His appointment, which is for two years, is to replace Datuk Junaidi Reduan whose term expired yesterday Aug 31).

Hilmy, who is Satok branch Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu deputy chief, believed that his experience of serving MBKS for over two decades and under four different mayors would make it easier for him to navigate the DBKU administration. - BERNAMA
