TUMPAT - The Registrar of Societies (RoS) is cleaning up inactive organisations and associations that no longer exist throughout the country.

The process was started two years ago after RoS found that many organisations and associations had not submitted annual statements or reports of general meetings.

RoS Director-General Mohd Nawardi Saad said the department would first send a notice to the organisation before cancelling its registration if it did not respond.

"For the past two years, RoS has found that a large number of organisations are inactive, some have been for more than 10 years and some have not even existed.

"However, the department still gives space for them and if they still do not send a report, the cancellation process will be done," he told reporters when met at the First Aid Course organised by the Pasir Pekan Prihatian Residents Association in Sungai Kelantan.

He said actions to cancel the organisation will also be taken for those who violate the rules and laws set by RoS.

In a related matter, Mohd Nawardi said organisations that had been cancelled could be re-registered if they wanted to continue operating.

So far, more than 180,000 active organisations have been recorded in Malaysia, including political parties and non-governmental organisations.
