JOHOR BAHRU - Muar Member of Parliament (MP) Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman's decision to leave the unity government and become an opposition will spark a healthy competition to Pakatan Harapan (PH)-Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN).

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim said that the decision made by the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) president is respected for its emphasis on principles and integrity as a political party.

"(However,) I ask Syed Saddiq and Muda to support the initiatives of the government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim if the government brings a reform initiative in Parliament that requires the approval of a two-thirds majority.

"In votes for amendments of the Federal Constitution or proposals or bills that are good and progressive presented from time to time," he said in a statement today.

Hassan added that the ‘third force’ which includes Muda and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), for example will give the people a wider choice.

"The two-party system like in the United States (US), namely Democrats and Republicans, are dominating too much of the politics of the superpower country.

"So, in Malaysia, there are only two coalitions, namely PH-BN and PN, so our situation is the same as in the US. As an analogy, the people only have two choices either Coca-Cola or Pepsi Cola which taste more or less the same," he said.

Yesterday, Muda was reported withdrew support for the unity government and would act as the third power opposition.

Saddiq revealed that a notification letter on the matter had been submitted to the Speaker of the House of Representatives Tan Sri Johari Abdul yesterday.

He said that the government's act of dropping 47 corruption charges against the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had made it difficult for Muda to remain in the Unity Government.
