SHAH ALAM - The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) will ensure that sensitive issues threatening ethnic unity in the state are handled as effectively as possible.

Its director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said Jais takes sensitive issues seriously, especially religious, customary and cultural differences.

According to him, as a country with a diverse population and culture, society sometimes faces sensitive issues that can disrupt harmony and consensus.

"These differences and diversities need to be managed as effectively as possible to prevent racial and religious divisions and racism among communities," he told reporters.

Earlier, he officiated the closing ceremony of the Selangor Khaira Ummah Realisation Convention at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque's Lecture and Discourse Hall here yesterday.

On the Multiracial Society Seminar: “Serumpun Bak Serai, Sesusun Bak Sirih” in conjunction with the convention, he said that Jais upholds values such as brotherhood, justice and tolerance in a multicultural society.

"In Islam, the concept of a multicultural and harmonious society has a basis in religious teachings.

"Although there is no explicit hadith mentioning a 'multicultural society,' Islamic principles encourage peace, tolerance, and cooperation among individuals from diverse ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds," he said.
