Eight dead after bus falls into gorge in India's Tamil Nadu

NEW DELHI - At least eight people were killed and many injured after a bus carrying 60 passengers fell into a deep gorge in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, local police said Sunday.

The mishap occurred in the state's Nilgiris district late on Saturday night, when the bus lost control while navigating the hairpin bend roads, a local policeman confirmed with Xinhua.

The ill-fated bus was on its way from Coonoor to the Tenkasi area as the passengers, who were on a tour to the scenic Ooty hill station, were returning home. The injured were sent to a local hospital. Some were in critical condition, according to the policeman.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the road mishap and announced monetary compensation to the families of the victims who died in the accident, and the injured. - BERNAMA-XINHUA
