BENTONG - The final sprint of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) campaign will be boosted by the presence of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He is scheduled to appear alongside opposition coalition leaders at a "grand finale" rally tomorrow.

The programme is set to take place in the evening, just a few hours before the end of the campaign period for the Pelangai by-election and the polling day on Saturday.

Pas secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan confirmed this as the final push that could have an impact on PN's bid for votes.

"We expect more supporters to turn out. Dr Mahathir, Tan Sri Muhyiddin, Kedah Menteri Besar, and other leaders, including the President of Gerakan, will be present," he said when met by reporters at the "Pelangai Ready for Change" inaugural lecture at Simpang Pelangai yesterday.

On Tuesday, Muhyiddin, who is the PN chairman, attended a PN inaugural lecture in Felda Chemomoi, which saw more people believed to be supporters in attendance.

This situation is different from other PN lectures that received less attention.

The Pelangai State Legislative Assembly by-election is necessary after the seat was declared vacant following the death of its incumbent, Datuk Seri Johari Harun, from BN, who was involved in a light aircraft crash in Elmina, Shah Alam, Selangor, on Aug 17.

PN is fielding a former teacher who is also a joint candidate in the 15th General Election (GE15), affectionately known as Cikgu Kasim.

Meanwhile, BN is fielding a local candidate, Datuk Amizar Abu Adam, and another independent candidate, Haslihelmy DM Zulhasli, is also competing for the traditional Umno seat.
