NEW DELHI - The Maldives and Pakistan on Wednesday condemned the Israeli attack on a hospital in Gaza that killed more than 500 patients, doctors and people sheltering from constant Israeli bombardment.

"Attacks on hospitals and civilian infrastructures, targetting civilians are unacceptable and are in explicit contravention of international humanitarian law," the Maldives government said in a statement.

The victims in the Al Ahli Baptist Hospital attack on Tuesday included a large number of women and children, the Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza said.

"Attacking a hospital, where civilians are seeking shelter and emergency treatment is inhumane and indefensible. The indiscriminate targetting of civilian population and facilities is a grave violation of international law and constitutes war crimes," Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The carnage in Gaza has fuelled anger against Israel and the United States across the Middle East, with protests being held in many cities on Tuesday.

International calls have intensified to force Israel to lift the siege of Gaza and allow deliveries of medicines, food, and basic necessities to the people starving under the Israeli blockade.- BERNAMA
