Suaram calls for an investigation into activist injured during the eviction dispute

SHAH ALAM - Suaram has urged for a prompt investigation into an incident that took place this morning in Perak, where an activist reportedly sustained a bloodied face after being forcefully pushed by Ipoh Land and Mines Office (PTG) officers.

The executive director Sevan Doraisamy, said that every government official, regardless of their position or role, bears the duty of carrying out their responsibilities with a commitment to fairness and integrity.

This encompasses not only refraining from violence but also upholding the rights, well-being, and welfare of the individuals they serve, including activists advocating for vulnerable and marginalised communities.

He added that according to Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) verified reports, a PTG officer allegedly and forcibly pushed activist Chong Yee Shanto to the ground to make way for bulldozers and excavators to evict six farmers in Kanthan this morning. Chong suffered injuries to her nose and mouth, as well as broken teeth, as a result of this thrust.

Later, at 2.05pm, he said three others include Karthiges Manickam, 42 (PSM Central Committee Member}), Ho Pon Tien, 53 (farmer), and Kesavan Parvathy, 30 (Perak Socialist Youth).

PSM Chairperson Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj was also detained by police.

"These events unfolded as farmers and activists attempted to halt PTG's efforts to demolish the farmers' land while negotiations were ongoing.

"All government officials, irrespective of their rank and mandate, have a responsibility to conduct their duties fairly and with integrity," he said in a statement today.

Sevan said the reported physical violence and arbitrary arrests by enforcement officers from PTG and the police appear to violate these principles.

"These actions not only grossly violate the fundamental right to liberty and security of those involved but also contribute to injustices such as displacement, loss of livelihoods, and inadequate legal protection for the affected farmers, who were promised alternatives for relocation by the Perak State Development Corporation," he added.

Suaram also demanded the immediate release of the four activists and the farmer and called for an investigation into the PTG officer's violent actions against Chong.

Furthermore, Suaram has urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to examine the legality of the forced eviction carried out by PTG while ensuring inclusive processes, including consultations with affected farmers and other stakeholders.
