THE sensitive topic of 3R (royal institutions, religion, and race) has once again reared its head during the recent campaign for the Kemaman by-election in Terengganu.

This time, the police have launched an investigation into several political leaders following their speeches during the campaign.

Some of these leaders have issued provocative statements, including a 'fatwa' urging Umno members to abandon the party, promising rewards akin to the time of Prophet Muhammad.

This blatant exploitation of 3R issues for political gain is deeply concerning and trivialises these sensitive matters.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission Chief Compliance Officer Datuk Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin had previously warned about the resurgence of 3R issues during elections. Unfortunately, this by-election has proven him right.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain has also reiterated the seriousness of this issue, emphasising their close monitoring of politicians' statements made through online campaigns and other platforms.

Despite the police's vigilance, some parties continue to make irresponsible remarks without considering the potential consequences.

This highlights the need for the government to find effective measures to prevent the exploitation of 3R issues in elections.
