SHAH ALAM - Motorists, particularly those traversing forested areas, are not immune to encounters with wild elephants roaming or crossing the highway.
One such hotspot for elephant-related incidents is the East-West Gerik-Jeli Highway.
To help you navigate these encounters safely, here are ten crucial tips:
- Practice Prudent Driving: Be mindful of your speed and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
- Heed Wildlife Crossing Signs: Slow down when approaching wildlife crossing signages.
- Avoid High Beams: High beams can startle elephants and hinder your visibility.
- Resist the Urge to Honk: Honking can agitate elephants and provoke an aggressive response.
- Stay Calm: Don't panic if you encounter an elephant. Maintaining composure is crucial.
- Remain Still: Avoid sudden movements and slowly back away from the elephant.
- Avoid Provocative Actions: Refrain from actions that may threaten or startle the elephant.
- Stay Inside Your Vehicle: Exiting your vehicle is highly risky and should be avoided.
- Avoid Using Flashlight Cameras: The sudden flash can provoke the elephant.

Elephant attack on family of three
A recent incident involving a family of three highlights the potential dangers of elephant encounters.
On Sunday, near the Titiwangsa Rest Stop, a family of three faced a harrowing experience when their car collided with a baby elephant at Kilometer 55, Jalan Raya Timur Barat Gerik-Jeli.
The collision triggered a distressing encounter as six wild elephants trampled the family's Perodua Axia car.
The vehicle sustained severe damage to the left side, bonnet, and boot.
Fortunately, the attack ceased when the injured baby elephant regained its footing and left the scene.
Police advice
Gerik district police chief Superintendent Zulkifli Mahmood stressed the importance of following safety guidelines when encountering elephants on the road.
He urged motorists to be cautious, avoid provoking the animals, and contact the authorities immediately in case of an incident.
