ALOR SETAR - A young boy died while his uncle sustained severe injuries after the motorcycle they were riding was involved in a crash with a tipper lorry on Jalan Chandek Kura in Langkawi yesterday.

Langkawi district police chief ACP Shariman Ashari said the police were alerted about the incident at 5.16 pm.

"The accident involved motorcyclist Mohamad Iqmal Noor Din, 25, from Kampung Padang Wahid and his nephew Muhammad Wassim Dayyan Amyrul Amry, 11, from Kampung Bukit Tangga.

"The incident is believed to have occurred when the lorry, coming from Jalan Batu Belah Batu Bertangkup direction, made a turn at the junction to enter Jalan Chandek Kura,” he said in a statement today.

Shariman said that the victims, on their way from Kuah to Kampung Chandek Kura, were unable to avoid the collision and hit the right rear side of the lorry.

"The boy, who suffered severe head injuries, died at Sultanah Maliha Hospital, while the motorcyclist, who sustained severe head and shoulder injuries, is still receiving treatment at the same hospital.

"The 51-year-old lorry driver has been arrested and his urine test came back positive for ganja. The case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said. - BERNAMA
