NEW YORK - A grandfather was shot and killed on the New York subway after he intervened to try and end an argument over loud music, police said Monday.

The victim, identified as 45-year-old Richard Henderson, was shot in the back and shoulder as he was riding the subway home Sunday evening, police said in a statement.

Authorities have made no arrests in a case underlining the random nature of gun violence in the United States, a country with more firearms than people.

It was the latest in a series of violent incidents on New York's ageing subway system, which is used by more than five million people daily.

Henderson was returning home to his family after watching an American football game at a friend's house, CBS New York reported, quoting Henderson's brother.

In October a man who opened fire in a crowded subway train in April 2022, wounding 29 people, was sentenced to 10 life terms in prison.

Last year around 1,100 people were shot in New York city, according to The New York Times. - AFP
