GEORGE TOWN - A senior police officer is under investigation for attempted murder after his girlfriend accused him of pushing her off the Penang Bridge yesterday during a heated argument.

The 40-year-old factory worker told police her 37-year-old boyfriend, an officer from another state, shoved her off the bridge near kilometre 2.8, heading towards Perai.

This accusation has triggered a full investigation under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

“Based on preliminary information, the woman claimed her boyfriend pushed her, but the investigation is still ongoing.

"The woman, however, did not suffer any injuries.

"Police will record statements from witnesses who witnessed the incident to assist in the investigation.

“We are initiating an investigation under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder but need to record statements from both victims to verify whether the woman's claim of push is true or otherwise," Penang Police Chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin told a media conference here today.

Kok Chin also mentioned that the policeman is currently being treated in the hospital for head injuries sustained during the incident.

"Police will record his statement shortly.

"Upon checking, the police found that the senior police officer has a criminal case still under investigation involving Section 323 of the Penal Code for assault in an incident in the Northeast District recently," he added.

The drama unfolded at 7.49pm as the couple, reportedly arguing in their Honda Civic, plunged from the bridge.

Miraculously, a passerby witnessed the fall and heroically rescued both by jumping into the water and pulling them onto a nearby fishing boat.

This news has sent shockwaves through the community, raising questions about police accountability and highlighting the need for a swift and thorough investigation.

As details continue to emerge, one thing is clear: this story is far from over.
