Due to the 2023 actors and writers strike in Hollywood, this year’s awards season puts a spotlight on a hectic week of back-to-back ceremonies.

But the awards season also gives way to the red carpet for celebrities to bring their fashion A-game, wearing custom couture or fresh-off-the-runway looks.

The new year has just begun but the prestigious award shows have set the stage for fashion trends this year. Here are some trends that we’ve taken note of throughout the award shows thus far.

BOWS Reviving a big trend from the 2019 Golden Globes, bows were back on the red carpet as the hair accoutrement can be seen on several actresses’ gowns that night. Just take a look at the big, yellow bow on the back of Sheryl Lee Randolph’s dress. Elle Fanning had it at the front of her white dress while Amanda Seyfried had it placed vertically on her black, strapless column gown.

VELVET

Several celebrities donned the soft, luxurious fabric that night including Jennifer Lawrence with a long dress by Dior. Haley Khalil and Angela Bassett also pulled off their dresses thanks to the shiny and beautiful drape of the velvet material. Amanda Seyfried topped off her black velvet dress with a vertical bow as well as black and pink Swarovski crystals. Elizabeth Debicki, Niecy Nash-Betts and Donald Glover also dressed up in velvet for the Emmy Awards this year.

GEN Z, MINIMALIST Bringing something less glitzy to the awards show were Billie Eilish and Bella Ramsey where these two carried a whole different fashion trend - gen z and minimalist. Eilish's Willy Chavarria set featured a beige pleated skirt, an oversize black blazer and a light blue Peter Pan collar shirt that she accessorised with a ribbon she received as a recent birthday gift. Bella Ramsey wore a minimalist blue jacket that was custom Prada and based on a wool shirt from their SS23 collection. Slim-cut trousers and black boots completed her fashion for the night.

ALL-BLACK Putting aside the female celebrities wearing black to the red carpet such as Rosamund Pike, Dua Lipa, Andra Day, Greta Gerwig, Jodie Foster, Sarah Snook and Jennifer Aniston, it is easy to summarise the majority of the men fashion for the Global Globes this year: all-black suits. Excluding Barry Keoghan who ruled the red carpet with a deep-flame custom Louis Vuitton suit as well as a few others like Justin Hartley, Teo Yoo, Matt Bomer, and Scott Evans who were seen in colours that night, many others chose all-black outfit for the occasion.

Trevor Noah, Robert Downey Jr.,Jeremy Allen White, Kieran Culkin, and Daniel Kaluuya were among those catching attention with their all-black ensembles. The Bear actress Ayo Edebiri stole the spotlight at Emmy Awards 2024 as she donned a custom Louis Vuitton black leather dress, fashion outlets even going as far as dominating her as the best dressed actress on the red carpet this awards season.
