Importance of istito'ah in Haj journey

SHAH ALAM - Emphasis on istito'ah, or readiness, is vital to ensure that every Haj pilgrim is adequately prepared mentally and physically before embarking on the sacred journey to the Tanah Suci.

Syariah Advisor Mustafar Mohd Suki said that Haj pilgrims must prepare themselves to be patient because when they are there, they will face various human challenges.

"Patience is key as the rituals in the Tanah Suci can be demanding, such as the journey from Arafah to Mina and the stoning at the Jamarat," he told Sinar recently.

Elaborating on istito'ah, Mustafar highlighted its various dimensions, including physical health, financial stability, and secure transportation, as stressed by Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH).

"The concept encompasses six crucial aspects, covering physical health, approval from Saudi authorities including quotas and visas, financial sufficiency, transportation arrangements, safe travel conditions, and the requirement for female pilgrims under 45 to be accompanied by a mahram," he added.

In terms of preparation, Mustafar outlined three key aspects: knowledge, sincerity, and physical well-being.

"Pilgrims must equip themselves with knowledge of the pillars, obligations, prohibitions, and Sunnah practices of Haj.

"They should foster sincerity through increased istighfar (seeking forgiveness) and supplication.

"Finally, physical readiness involves proper nutrition and healthcare to ensure the stamina required for worship," he added.

Mustafar highlighted the importance of TH's health screening process in assessing the physical and mental fitness of pilgrims before their departure.

"This screening not only detects potential health issues but also serves as a health record for early intervention.

"Moreover, it ensures compliance with Saudi regulations and international health standards," he said.

Offering advice to pilgrims, Mustafar suggested engaging in self-preparation by studying the history of Mecca and Medina and maintaining prayers for a smooth and accepted Haj experience.

Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) announced that 31,600 potential pilgrims have received offers for this year's Haj, including six per cent who successfully appealed for the pilgrimage.
