India's MP arrested after woman accuses him of sexual assault

He was arrested during a press briefing he had organised at his house to address the allegations against him.

NEW DELHI - An Indian opposition parliament member (MP) was arrested on Thursday (Jan 30) following rape accusations by a woman.

The married woman has accused the MP, who represents a constituency in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, of sexually exploiting her for four years by promising to marry her and help advance her political career.

Police had registered a case against the 60-year-old lawmaker on January 17.

He was arrested during a press briefing he had organised at his house to address the allegations against him. - BERNAMA

The report also pointed out that tighter and more volatile financial conditions in the US may have "ripple effects" on emerging markets and developing economies, leading to higher financing costs.
