Secondhand cars: Affordable, practical and worth considering
Buying secondhand cars might not be the first choice for everyone, but for some, it is the most practical option due to affordability and convenience especially for first-time car owners or those planning to downsize.

Rent Wheels Car Rental Ceo Devva Darsshan said that, with proper care, used cars can last up to 30 years.
According to Rent Wheels Car Rentals’ chief executive officer, Devva Darsshan, used cars should not be discarded immediately if they are still in good condition, though such cases may be rare.
Devva has been purchasing secondhand cars from sellers for eight years to rent them out.
He said that used cars can be profitable when sold at a stable price while being well-maintained.
"I will only buy secondhand cars if they meet both of these conditions," Devva said.
For those using secondhand cars, maintaining them in good condition is essential.
He advised that if a car is not used regularly, starting the engine weekly helps keep it active.
"We ensure that secondhand cars are well-maintained so clients feel good and confident when purchasing them.
"Sometimes, I sell or upgrade them to a better model for customers," he said.
Devva stated that cars reflect their owners, making it important to consider the type of car one drives.
Some common adjustments he makes to secondhand cars sold to his company include fixing the mileage or repairing a car after it has been involved in an accident.
Addressing the stigma associated with buying secondhand cars, Devva said that many people assume used cars are not durable because of their lower price and the fact that they have been used.
"The truth is, it’s not always what it seems, once you have carried out all the necessary repairs to restore the car, it can be kept in mint condition," he said.
Debunking the stigma further, he explained that secondhand cars can actually last up to 30 years.
"It all depends on how often you use it and how well you take care of it," he said.
He stated that regular visits to the mechanic are necessary to maintain a secondhand car, along with ensuring that it is well protected, which includes keeping the car indoors.
"The heat can melt the rubber and tubes in the car, which increases mileage and reduces the car’s value," he explained.
He also noted that, on average, every four to six years, car owners replace their vehicles by selling the used one and purchasing a new one.
Devva said that secondhand cars are particularly popular among fresh graduates and senior citizens.
"Fresh graduates buy them as their first car, and the majority of young people opt for secondhand vehicles," he said.
According to Devva, Petaling Jaya has a well-established "car culture," where car owners sell their vehicles at negotiable prices.
He added that this culture has existed for over 20 years, with some car owners even transitioning into dealers who sell other secondhand vehicles.
He advised those interested in buying a used car to check the mileage at a proper workshop before purchasing, as sellers often adjust it before handing over the vehicle to the customer.
Secondhand cars can be a smart choice if you know what to look for.
Always inspect thoroughly and seek professional advice before buying.
With thoughtful choices and proper care, secondhand cars can be reliable and valuable in the long term, proving that quality does not always come brand new.
