Two-month-old baby in urgent need of RM110,000 for life-saving heart surgery

BUKIT MERTAJAM - A two-month-old baby girl Nur Khadijah Aryana Mohammad Shahrin required public donations amounting to RM110,000 for an urgent heart surgery.

Khadijah, who hailed from Bukit Mertajam, was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect at birth.

One Hope Charity & Welfare chairman Datuk Chua Sui Hau said that Khadijah depended on oxygen support since birth.

He said a medical examination revealed that a major blood vessel in her heart had not formed properly, causing her blood and oxygen to mix.

Khadijah, who has had a heart condition since birth, requires urgent treatment.

"This condition can lead to fluid buildup in her lungs, increase the risk of bacterial infections, and cause oxygen deficiency and bluish discolouration every time she cries.

"This serious heart defect prevents Khadijah from breathing on her own.

"Frequent bacterial infections have forced her to remain in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for nearly two months," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Chua added that doctors had informed them that the only way for the baby, who was born on Jan 4 weighing 2.97 kilogrammes, to survive was through immediate surgery.

He said that the surgery aimed to close the hole in her heart and insert a Contegra Valved Conduit implant, scheduled for Feb 28.

He added that the RM110,000 surgery cost was a heavy burden on her parents, who were financially constrained.

Furthermore, the charity organisation was committed to assisting Khadijah’s family in raising funds to ensure that the surgery was not delayed.

He said that the baby’s father, Mohammad Shahrin Abd Aziz, 30, works as a production assistant at a factory, while her mother, Nor Fazliana Mohd Ramli, 31, is a customer service officer.

" Khadijah is the couple’s firstborn," he said.
