Man’s 29-year-old ‘duit raya’ from Tun Mahathir goes viral
The RM3 worth of 10 sen coins is still well-preserved in a rolled-up piece of paper.
SHAH ALAM – A young man's sharing of a fond memory of receiving duit raya from former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad 29 years ago has captured the attention of social media users.
Through a recent TikTok post, Syamil Shuib shared his prized possession, RM3 worth of 10 sen coins, still well-preserved in a rolled-up piece of paper.
The package not only contains the priceless nostalgic factor of the coins but also bears the amount given and Dr Mahathir’s signature.
Reflecting on the memory, Syamil expressed how fortunate he was to have experienced such a moment, something he believed the younger generation today might never encounter.
“Duit raya from Tun (Dr Mahathir) for me. Thank you, @chedetofficial. The current generation may no longer come across duit raya like this,” he wrote in the post.
Adding to the nostalgia, Syamil also shared a photo of himself with Dr Mahathir, taken when the distinguished statesman was still serving as the Prime Minister.
His 29-second video quickly gained traction, amassing nearly 60,000 likes, over 1,000 comments and close to 2,300 shares, proving that sentimental moments from the past still resonate with many today.
