KUALA LUMPUR - Despite the emergence of new talents continuously shaping the local entertainment industry, veteran actor Jalil Hamid remains in demand, with local film and drama productions still eager to cast him.

The Bisik Pada Langit actor is among the industry’s seasoned performers who have successfully proven that talent and experience are valuable and appreciated.

Having stepped into the entertainment world 45 years ago, the actor-who is also known as a comedian and singer-is grateful that at 68 years old, he still receives various acting offers for dramas, telefilms, movies, and commercials, even being entrusted with leading roles.

"Alhamdulillah, I still receive offers-not in abundance, but consistently. It’s heartening to know that my talent is still recognised in this field that I deeply love.

"This Raya, I had the opportunity to star in three festive commercials and a drama directed by Rashid Sibir. I will also appear as one of the main characters in a horror film, Laknat, which will hit cinemas this June," he said.

Having won multiple major awards throughout his acting career, Jalil-who was named Best Supporting Actor at the 13th Malaysian Film Festival-said he now has to be more selective with his roles, choosing characters that suit his age.

"If it’s a heavy script, like a horror story, I no longer take those roles. Now, I’m more comfortable playing elderly characters, like a father figure.

"Besides that, if the offered pay is not reasonable, I will politely decline. Age should not be an excuse for others to take advantage of us. Compensation should be fair, reflecting the experience we bring to the industry," he said, adding that he will continue acting as long as there is demand.

When asked about the key to his longevity in the industry, Jalil, who hails from Masai, Johor, said that maintaining strong work discipline is crucial to ensuring high-quality performances.

"As seasoned actors, when we receive a role, we give our best so that the audience truly feels the impact. If we are dedicated, the results will be of high quality."

"I also prioritise discipline, always arriving early at filming locations and thoroughly studying my character. Perhaps another reason I am still in demand is that I am not difficult to work with-I adapt well to different work environments," he said.

Aside from his commitment to acting, the singer-known for hits like Ayam, Makan, Mata, and Raya-hopes to return to the music scene with new songs someday.

He explained that he took a break from singing due to health issues.

"I never stopped singing; I just took a temporary break because of health concerns. Honestly, I really miss performing on stage and hope to entertain my fans again.

"Singing has always been my passion, but lately, I’ve been receiving more acting offers. If an opportunity comes along, I’ll take it," he said. - BERNAMA
