PKR now in 'test of power' phase – Rafizi
“When we were struggling, no one wanted to be with us."
SEREMBAN – PKR is now undergoing a test of power phase after successfully forming a Unity Government between Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN).
PKR Deputy President Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli said that many people rushed to join PKR in pursuit of positions and power, which led to a movement attempting to overthrow the 'veterans' who had been long-serving members of the party.
“When we were struggling, no one wanted to be with us. It was the veterans like me, Tok Min (Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun) and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, who’ve been through this process.
“But after we came into power in 2022, there was an influx of members joining, competing for positions and power and certain movements attempted to bring down the veterans to elevate specific leaders,” he said while speaking at the Jelajah Hidupkan Idealisme Reformasi Dalam Ujian Kuasa (HIRUK) programme held at Klana Grand Ballroom on Sunday.
Recalling the Reformasi movement, the Pandan Member of Parliament said that some of the early members of the party, including himself, had started out by being impromptu speakers.
“I used to work at a chartered accountant’s firm, spent 10 years in the United Kingdom (UK), but when I returned to Malaysia, I put up posters and hung flags.
“But I never managed the traffic. The toughest part was being an impromptu speaker. When we were struggling, no one wanted to be close. The people are observing who the leaders are, truly sincere in their struggle,” he said.
He emphasised that the upcoming PKR election is crucial to ensure the continuity of PH’s battle, particularly PKR, in continuing to govern the country ahead of the 16th General Election.
“In reality, we still have a long way to go. This election is important because we cannot assume that we will remain in power forever.
“If we lose in the next general election and fail to get votes, what then? When we were in power, many came, but when we lost power, it is these comrades, who fought without positions, that we will search for again,” he said.
