Marital dispute led to viral wrong-way driving in Johor Bahru

The dangerous driving was recorded by another road user and subsequently went viral on social media.

JOHOR BAHRU – A man claimed a disagreement with his wife caused him to drive dangerously against traffic flow on Jalan Skudai - Pantai Lido early Saturday morning.

According to Johor Bahru Selatan District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat, investigations revealed that the incident occurred at 1.41am.

It involved a blue Perodua Aruz sports utility vehicle (SUV) driven by a 34-year-old local man.

He said the Johor Bahru Selatan District Police Headquarters received information from Bukit Aman Police Headquarters about the incident at 9.10pm on the same day.

The dangerous driving was recorded by another road user and subsequently went viral on social media.

"A check of the vehicle’s registration number enabled the police to identify the owner and driver of the vehicle.

"The police then directed the driver to report to the Johor Bahru Selatan Traffic Police Station to assist in the investigation," he said in a statement on Monday.

During interrogations, the SUV driver admitted to driving against the traffic flow, explaining that he was having a disagreement with his wife, which caused him to lose focus and enter the wrong lane.

The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers dangerous and reckless driving.
