Mental edge sets apart heritage players in Harimau Malaya, says ex-defender Azmeer Yusof
The key advantage of naturalised and heritage players in the Harimau Malaya squad is their ability to think several moves ahead, maintaining composure and making quick decisions under pressure.

SHAH ALAM – The true difference between naturalised, heritage and local footballers isn't physical ability, but mental sharpness, says former Kedah defender Azmeer Yusof.
According to Azmeer, the key advantage of naturalised and heritage players in the Harimau Malaya squad is their ability to think several moves ahead, maintaining composure and making quick decisions under pressure.

“The biggest difference between us and them is their way of thinking. They think three, four steps ahead before the ball reaches their feet. Before the opponent reacts, they have already acted.
"Before the opponent makes a decision, they have already scored.
“Back then when I was still playing, sometimes I tried to think a few steps ahead, but the technique to act and make decisions came too slowly for me. Meanwhile, they complete everything in one go, thinking, acting and deciding," he said.
Azmeer pointed out how naturalised and heritage players remain calm in critical moments, unlike some local players who resort to rushed clearances.
He stated that even under pressure, naturalised and heritage players stay composed.
“Local players sometimes just boot the ball away, even experienced ones. That is where intelligence matters. The way they pass is the same, using the inside of the foot.
"The way they strike the ball is the same, using the front of the boot. What sets them apart is their thinking and composure,” he added.
Amid discussions about naturalised players, Azmeer called for harmony. He said that whether people support their inclusion or not, everyone’s opinion is welcome.
“There is no need for conflict. All success or failure is by the will of Allah,” he said.
The Harimau Malaya squad recently impressed with a 4-0 win over Vietnam in the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers, showcasing the effective blend of local, heritage and naturalised talent.
