PUTRAJAYA – “I will love this country until my last breath.”

That was the heartfelt declaration by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in response to public questions on why he continues to care deeply about Malaysia.

Acknowledging those who have asked why he does not simply retire and leave the future to the younger generation, the 100-year-old statesman said his unwavering concern stems from his deep roots in the country.

“This is my country. I was born here. I grew up here and have gained so much from it,” he said in a Facebook post.

He stressed that as a Malay Malaysian who has enjoyed a safe and secure life, it would be wrong for him to feel indifferent about the nation’s future.

“This country is great. The climate is pleasant, the land is fertile and it is rich in natural resources.

“To me, it has already given so much, and it can offer even more, if we know how to manage it well,” the post read.

Dr Mahathir also noted that Malaysia is the only homeland he has ever known.

“I have nowhere else to go. That’s why I love this country. I will love it until my last breath,” he said, adding that many people in the world still have no land or nation to call their own.

Widely regarded as the Father of Modernisation, Dr Mahathir celebrated his 100th birthday on July 10.
