Kelantan key drug transit hub with ‘pil kuda’ leading local demand
Amphetamine pills remains the top choice among addicts probably because it’s cheap, gets them high quickly and easy to get.
KOTA BHARU - Kelantan police have revealed that the state has become a transit point for drugs such as syabu (methamphetamine), ganja and heroin smuggled in from neighbouring countries.
However, state police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said pil kuda (amphetamine pills) remained the most popular drug of choice among local addicts.
“Amphetamine pills have almost become a ‘tradition’ not just in Kelantan, but also in Terengganu and Pahang.
“Perhaps it’s because they’re cheap, give a quick high and are easy to get,” he said during a press conference after officiating the state police headquarters’ monthly assembly on Thursday.
He said drugs like syabu, ganja and heroin were less popular among addicts in the state as most of them were sent to the West Coast instead.
He said the state’s proximity to Thailand, separated only by Sungai Golok, positioned Kelantan as a strategic drug smuggling entry point.
To address this, Yusoff said Malaysian enforcement agencies have maintain strong cooperation with their counterparts in the neighbouring country, focusing on intelligence sharing to monitor and disrupt smuggling operations.
