Fair skin, fatal risk? Doctor sounds alarm on illegal whitening jabs
Unregulated treatments may cause liver and kidney damage, disrupt the immune system and trigger sudden shortness of breath following the procedure.

KUALA LUMPUR – Excessive use of skin whitening injections without proper medical supervision can lead to life-threatening complications, including heart failure.
Certified aesthetic physician Dr Che Muhammad Hafiz Che Baharum emphasised that such unregulated treatments may also cause liver and kidney damage, disrupt the immune system and trigger sudden shortness of breath following the procedure.
More worryingly, the Regalion Clinic founder stressed that these illicit treatments could lead to severe mental health issues as a result of side effects and complications.
“Illegal skin whitening injections are once again making rounds on social media and this growing trend is alarming medical professionals as more people fall prey to cheap offers.
“This issue isn’t new, it has long been widespread, often carried out in secrecy at hotels or by unqualified individuals offering home-to-home services,” he told Sinar Harian on Monday.

This follows the circulation of a short video clip showing a woman administering a whitening drip while seated in her car.
The video sparked concern among netizens, many of whom expressed worry about the potential health risks she may face.
Commenting further, Dr Hafiz highlighted that many women were lured into these unauthorised services due to their low cost and the quick results promised in achieving fairer skin.
“The combination of bargain pricing and rapid effects makes it easy for people to fall into the trap set by opportunists,” he added.
He also noted that common substances used in these injections include glutathione, vitamin C, and other additives.
“Everyone wants to look fair and beautiful, but don’t let that desire lead you down a dangerous path.
“Always consult a licensed doctor registered with the Health Ministry (MOH).
“Be wary of cheap deals, because the consequences can be far more than you bargained for,” he said.
