WHAT IS AN INQUEST?
An inquest is an official investigation conducted by the Coroner’s Court to determine the cause and reason for a person’s death when the death is considered unusual, sudden or suspicious.
Its purpose is not to identify who is at fault, but to establish facts, specifically how, when, where and what caused the death.
WHEN IS AN INQUEST HELD?
- Death occurs in police or prison custody.
- Death caused by a major accident or disaster.
- Death that raises questions or controversy.
