NEW DELHI – A painter from Uttar Pradesh has confessed to killing his wife and burying her in a Delhi cemetery after suspecting her of having an affair, in a crime that police say eerily mirrors the plot of the Bollywood film Drishyam.

47-year-old Shadab Ali was arrested for murdering his 30-year-old wife, Fatima.

His crime was exposed after closed-circuit cameras (CCTV) footage contradicted his attempt to portray her disappearance as an elopement.

According to Delhi’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) South, Ankit Chauhan, Shadab had been secretly poisoning Fatima over five days with pesticides and sedatives.

On Aug 2, with the help of his friends Shahrukh Khan, Tanveer and another suspect who is still on the run, Shadab transported her body by car to a cemetery in Mehrauli.

The trio buried her body and discarded her clothes in a canal to conceal the crime.

Shadab then returned to his hometown in Amroha, using Fatima’s phone to send messages suggesting she had left to marry another man.

The truth began to unravel when one of Fatima’s friends filed a missing person report at Mehrauli Police Station on Aug 10, suspecting she had been kidnapped.

CCTV footage later showed Fatima with her husband and others, appearing unconscious.

Shadab initially denied involvement, claiming her body had been thrown into a canal, but later confessed to planning her murder due to suspicions of an affair.

Investigations revealed that he had taken Fatima to a house in Fatehpur Beri, where he worked on a construction project.

Despite being in pain, she was forced to consume pesticide and was briefly taken to a medical assistant before being brought back to their home in Mehrauli.

Fatima died on Aug 1. The next night, Shadab, Shahrukh and Tanveer buried her in the cemetery.

On Aug 15, Delhi Police exhumed Fatima’s grave in the presence of a sub-divisional magistrate.

Shadab, Shahrukh and Tanveer were arrested, while another suspect remains at large. The police have also seized the vehicle used in the crime. — Agency
