This 17-year-old thought she was buying a collectible toy keychain on TikTok, she ended up in tears
She said after waiting for more than a week, she finally received her parcel but was left heartbroken when it contained nothing but stones.
KUALA LUMPUR – Putriquxiara Md Sarrif, 17, said she had long wanted to buy a collectible toy keychain and was enticed by what appeared to be a live stream promotion on Aug 19, eventually placing an order for the item for RM60.
“I wanted the keychain for a while so when I saw the live promotion, I was immediately attracted. But later I realised the so-called live stream was actually a pre-recorded video,” she said on Tuesday.
She said after waiting for more than a week, she finally received her parcel on Aug 25 but was left heartbroken when it contained nothing but stones.
“I was very disappointed because I really wanted to keep it (keychain) as part of my collection, but when I opened the package there were just stones. At that moment, I cried,” she said.
Her father, Md Sarrif Abd Majid, 45, lodged a complaint with the seller but his messages were ignored and his account was blocked from further interaction.
He said the scammer’s tactic was to stream pre-recorded videos while pretending to engage with buyers.
“If you observe closely, the seller never reads the comments sent by viewers.
“This makes it easy for them to deceive people because many do not realise the broadcast had already been recorded earlier,” he said.
He also warned that the technique was increasingly common among scammers and called on TikTok to take stricter measures against such fraudulent accounts.
“I hope the authorities and platform operators will not allow users to be cheated like this. Do not let these syndicates gain easy profit by tricking others,” he added.
