SHAH ALAM – After years of confinement, former Guantanamo Bay detainee Mohammed Nazir Lep has begun a new chapter of his life by marrying Zuraizah Zainal in a ceremony in Bakri, Johor.

The modest event, steeped in Malay tradition, was filled with joy and attended by close relatives and friends.

Among those present was Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, a guest who acknowledged the occasion’s significance for those who had followed Nazir’s journey.

Nazir, 49, who was affectionately known as “Pak J,” was one of two Malaysians detained at the US military facility in Guantanamo Bay.

He was arrested in Thailand in 2003 over alleged ties to regional militant groups and spent nearly 20 years in detention before being repatriated to Malaysia in December of last year.

For his family, seeing him settle down was a deeply emotional moment.

His nephew, Muhammad Hazizi Najib, 37, stated that he had seen a different side of "Pak J."

"He often shares guidance on life and religion. Alhamdulillah, our family has stood by him through everything, and we're grateful to see him rebuild his life," Hazizi was quoted as saying.
