Three foreigners among seven Buddhist monks killed in Sri Lanka cable car accident

Three of the dead were from India, Russia and Romania.

NEW DELH - Seven Buddhist monks, including three foreigners, were killed and six injured in a cable car accident at a monastery in central Sri Lanka.

The accident happened on Wednesday night as the monks were returning to the Na Uyana Monastery in Nikaweratiya, about 130 kilometres from the capital Colombo, after performing rituals, officials said on Thursday.

Three of the dead were from India, Russia and Romania.

The trolley carrying 13 monks fell down a hillside after a cable supporting it snapped.

Two monks escaped with minor injuries after jumping from it. - BERNAMA
