IPOH - Police have arrested a man after a viral video showed him chasing and beating a pet dog with a metal rod until it died, at a house in Taman Arkid, here, recently.

Police confirmed that the one-minute-31-second video was uploaded on Instagram by the Malaysian Animal Organisation and quickly spread across social media.

Despite attempts to stop him, the man was seen pursuing the dog and striking it repeatedly until it was left bloodied.

Ipoh district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said a report was lodged on Sept 19 at the Menglembu police station.

“The suspect is now under police bail while further investigation is being carried out,” he said.

The case was being investigated under Section 29(1)(a) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 for animal cruelty.

The suspect was also investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation against family members.

“The public is advised not to circulate any video or statement that may cause public concern.

“Police take all cases of animal cruelty seriously and will work with the relevant agencies for further action,” he said.

Authorities have also encouraged the public to report any information on animal abuse to the police or the Veterinary Services Department.
