SHAH ALAM - Twelve food stalls in a Penang food court were issued notices and nine ordered to close for two weeks after a nurse discovered a fried rat in a tray of chicken behind Penang Hospital.
The incident occurred at a hawker centre along Jalan Utama, where a nurse was buying food when she spotted what appeared to be a fried rat among pieces of chicken.
A report by China Press stated that the rodent may have accidentally fallen into the fryer while the hawker was cooking, before being served to customers.
The nurse immediately alerted the Penang Health Department and the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), prompting an inspection of the premises.
Health officers who visited the site last week found several stalls in unsanitary conditions, including evidence of rat and cockroach droppings.
Twelve stalls were issued warnings for hygiene violations, while nine were ordered to shut down for 14 days to allow for cleaning and corrective measures.
MBPP said stall operators must conduct thorough cleaning and meet hygiene requirements before they are permitted to resume operations.
