SHAH ALAM - The tenure of Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif will officially end on Nov 14, as she takes on a new leadership role with a government-linked company (GLC) spearheading a national development initiative in the capital.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the decision was made to enable Maimunah to begin her new assignment leading a GLC that will oversee the development of a new landmark project in Kuala Lumpur.

He said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim had consented to shorten her term to Aug 15, 2024 to Nov 14, 2025, citing service needs and her extensive expertise in sustainable urban planning.

“This decision takes into account the government’s service requirements and Datuk Seri Maimunah’s broad experience in sustainable city development, in line with her international credentials as former Executive Director of UN-Habitat,” Shamsul said in a statement today.

He added that the government is confident Maimunah’s new posting will allow her to continue contributing strategic leadership to key national projects.

During her tenure at Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), Maimunah led several major reforms, strengthening governance and improving service delivery through integrity-based management.

Under her leadership, DBKL successfully overcame years of deficit, recording a RM27.6 million surplus in 2024, compared to deficits of RM75.3 million in 2023 and RM283 million in 2022.

Shamsul said the turnaround reflected “prudent, efficient, and strategic financial management,” which positioned DBKL for long-term fiscal stability.

He also highlighted Maimunah’s international contributions, including collaborations with Unicef on the Cash Plus and Child-Friendly City Initiatives, and her role in organising the Asean Sustainable Urban Forum and the Asean Governors and Mayors Meeting in conjunction with Malaysia’s Asean Chairmanship in 2025.

Her efforts to champion green and sustainable city agendas were also evident through initiatives such as the Zero Waste, Green Loop, and Urban Climate Resilience Programme (UCRP), aligning Kuala Lumpur’s vision of becoming a climate-resilient, carbon-neutral city.

Maimunah’s leadership has earned her multiple awards, including the 2024 Malaysia Public Relations and Communications Leadership Award, the Nona Superwoman Award and the Best Local Authority Leadership Excellence Award (City Category) in 2025.

Internationally, she was named “Woman of the Decade” by the Women Economic Forum and received the Leadership Award 2025 from Fira de Barcelona at the World Smart City Expo.

“The government believes her experience and leadership will ensure the success of the new landmark project under the GLC, in line with the Madani aspirations for Kuala Lumpur,” Shamsul said, extending the government’s appreciation for her service and contributions as mayor.
