‘She threw plates and called me a burden’: Man opens up about alleged abuse

KUALA LUMPUR - A man claimed that he became a victim of abuse by his wife after losing a leg in a motorcycle accident that affected his ability to work as he used to.

The man, who only wanted to be known as Aiman, 45, said his life changed after the accident three years ago, which left him unable to maintain a stable job that had been his family’s main source of income.

"Before this, I earned nearly RM10,000 a month. Our life was comfortable.

"Once a year, I would take the family on vacation," he said, living in a flat in Sentul.

However, after losing his leg, Aiman could only operate a small burger stall in front of his home, earning an uncertain income of between RM40 and RM70 a day.

He said that although it was very little compared to before, it was all he was able to do.

He further explained that the financial strain forced his wife to work full time, which increased tension in their relationship.

He said that since he could no longer work as before, she began getting angry and swearing at him, telling him that he was a burden on the family.

Aiman described how quarrels escalated, with his wife acting aggressively by throwing objects at him.

He said that the television remote had once hit his face and that plates had even been thrown until they landed on his prosthetic leg.

He also once fell after being pushed by his wife during an argument, injuring his back and making movement difficult for several days.

"When I fell, I could not get up quickly. I felt very embarrassed when my children saw," he said.

Aiman said he endured this for nearly a year before a more serious incident occurred when his wife threw a glass cup at him.

Concerned for his safety, he sought support from his family and NGOs but has not filed a police report to avoid arresting his wife, who is now the family’s sole source of income.
