SHAH ALAM – United States (US) President Donald Trump appeared to struggle to stay awake during a more than two-hour Cabinet meeting at the White House on Tuesday, as his eyes repeatedly closed in what observers described as moments of near-drowsiness.

A video of the meeting, which has gone viral on social media, shows several instances where Trump’s eyes narrowed or fully closed while Cabinet members were delivering their reports.

An analysis by a major US newspaper found that the president’s eyes were shut nine times, totalling nearly six minutes.

However, the White House Press Office denied that Trump had fallen asleep, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt insisting the President was “listening intently and fully leading the meeting.”

The incident has reignited debate over Trump’s age, now 79, his energy level and his capability to lead, especially as he frequently mocked former President Joe Biden with the nickname “Sleepy Joe.”

Observers also noted that the meeting took place after a long night for Trump, during which he reportedly made nearly 150 social media posts, which may have contributed to his fatigued appearance.

The episode adds to a list of public moments that have raised questions about Trump’s alertness and physical stamina, amid global scrutiny of the health of ageing world leaders.
