SHAH ALAM – AirAsia has introduced a significant policy change that gives its female cabin crew members the option to wear the hijab while on duty, marking an evolution in the airline’s commitment to diversity, comfort, and inclusivity across its global operations.

AirAsia announced on Friday that it has refreshed its cabin crew uniform policy, now permitting female staff to wear the hijab if they choose.

The change reflects the airline’s culture and ongoing development shaped through employee feedback.

AirAsia Aviation Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bo Lingam said the company is “proud of this improvement” as it supports the growth of the airline as a global brand with a diverse workforce representing the cultures it connects.

“AirAsia is proud to create a working environment where every Allstar feels confident, comfortable, and proud to represent the airline wherever they fly.

“Our uniforms have always reflected professionalism, safety and comfort. This evolution builds on that foundation by giving our staff confidence that aligns with their beliefs,” he said.

Previously, hijab use was limited to certain routes such as Jeddah, where local regulations required it.

The latest change widens that flexibility to all female cabin crew, ensuring consistency across AirAsia’s network while maintaining its professional brand identity.

“Our Allstars come from various backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs, yet we are united in our commitment to provide world-class service and care to our guests, as demonstrated by our numerous annual aviation awards. We will continue to gather feedback from Allstars and work closely on the detailed design and implementation before it is fully rolled out. We aim to begin this in Ramadan 2026,” she said.

Capital A Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tan Sri Tony Fernandes emphasised the importance of listening to staff when they raised the issue.

“Respecting differing views and beliefs is not only part of our culture, but it has shaped our success over the years.

“This is how we continue to grow by evolving based on feedback from our staff,” he said.

The airline will retain its iconic red cabin crew uniform, enhanced with a newly designed hijab and trousers based on the style used by crews on AirAsia’s Jeddah route.

The upgrade ensures safety, comfort and brand consistency across all operations.
