ERFURT - Robbers who broke into a flat in eastern Germany took nothing but a jar of sausages, leaving police and the owner wondering why they had even bothered to stage the break-in, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

The burglars forced open the entrance door to the 29-year-old man's apartment in the town of Sömmerda, to the west of Leipzig, on Thursday, police said on Tuesday.

But the only thing the owner reported as missing was a jar of knackwurst worth about €3 (US$3.50).

The damage caused to the door is likely to "far exceed" the loot, police said.

Investigations have been launched over a particularly serious case of theft. - BERNAMA-DPA
