SIBU - A local woman in her 40s suffered losses totalling RM243,300 after she was a victim of an online lucky draw scam.

Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said police received a report from the victim yesterday.

He said the victim, a housewife, claimed that she received a phone call from an unknown individual on Dec 24 informing her that she had won a cash prize worth RM237,000.

"The suspect then asked the victim to make an advance payment of RM6,000, purportedly to facilitate the release of the prize money,” he said in a statement today.

Zulkipli said the victim, who did not suspect any wrongdoing, subsequently carried out 15 fund transfer transactions into 15 local bank accounts, involving an amount of RM243,300.

"After all the payments were made, the victim did not receive any prize money as promised. She then realised that she had been cheated and later lodged a police report,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Zulkipli also advised the public to remain vigilant against any cash prize offers received via phone calls, messages or social media, and not to make any money transfers to accounts belonging to unknown individuals. - BERNAMA
